Busitema University Library to Host Wikimedia Training to Strengthen Uganda’s Digital Heritage

Busitema University Library will on Saturday, 26 September 2026, host a Wikimedia training and editing session aimed at equipping students, staff and new contributors with the skills to participate in documenting and improving knowledge about Uganda on Wikimedia platforms.

The training, organised in partnership with the Wikimedia Community User Group Uganda, will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the eLearning Centre, Faculty of Engineering Library, Busitema Campus.

The activity forms part of a wider effort to strengthen Uganda’s presence within the global digital knowledge space by building a community of contributors who can help document the country’s history, culture, institutions, people and other areas of public interest. Through Wikimedia platforms, contributors can help make this knowledge more visible and accessible while improving the quality of information already available online.

Students and staff regularly use Wikipedia and other online information resources for learning and research, but they can also play an active role in improving the information that others find there. The Wikimedia training therefore moves participants from being consumers of digital information to becoming contributors who understand how knowledge is created, referenced and shared online.

During Saturday’s session, participants will be introduced to Wikipedia editing and Wikimedia account creation, before taking part in practical editing activities. They will learn how to improve existing Wikipedia articles, identify information that can be strengthened, work with appropriate sources and contribute content in a responsible and structured manner.

The training will also provide participants with an opportunity to develop broader digital and information literacy skills, including evaluating sources, referencing information and understanding the collaborative processes through which content on Wikipedia is developed and improved.

Saturday’s engagement builds on an earlier Wikimedia training held at Busitema University in April this year, which introduced members of the University community to Wikimedia editing and participation. The upcoming session provides an opportunity for existing contributors to strengthen their editing skills while also bringing new editors into the Busitema Wiki Club community.

Busitema University Library is calling upon students who have never edited Wikipedia before, as well as those who participated in previous Wikimedia activities, to take part in the training. No previous editing experience is required, making the session an entry point for anyone interested in learning how they can contribute to free and openly accessible knowledge about Uganda.

Participants are encouraged to come with a laptop where possible and be ready to take part in the practical editing sessions.

By developing a growing community of trained Wikimedia contributors, the partnership provides an opportunity for Uganda’s universities to contribute more actively to the preservation and visibility of the country’s knowledge and heritage in digital spaces.
